Recently, I read an article that had been shared on Facebook by a missionary friend of ours about 10 things missionaries probably would not share with their audience. One of them hit home with me and I thought I would be courageous enough to share it with you.
After spending 10 years now traveling around the world preaching, teaching, and building I see a trend. Social media, websites, email, and texting all play their roles in “getting the word out”. All of our friends enjoy receiving up to the minute updates no matter where we may be in the world but one thing they may not realize is that a “like” on Facebook just doesn’t pay the bills. While, as a ministry, we keep our operating costs down to the bare minimum (less than 10% goes to administrative expenses), the fact remains that those costs are a very real part of the big picture. It is much easier to create awareness of a major need such as “building another orphanage” or “supporting an orphan” because one can connect easier with brick and mortar or a child’s face. But what we sometimes fail to realize is that without the infrastructure of the ministry (the General Fund), none of these other ministries will happen. That’s why my wife and I do not personally sponsor an orphan, instead, we give sacrificially to the ministry that makes it possible for orphans to be supported, orphanages to be built, preaching and teaching to take place.
